VCU vs. Radford
March 2, 2002
Despite going down to Radford with less players than expected, the VCU Women's Rugby Team pulled together to squeak out a win against a club that has been around a long time in Virginia.
It was a very cold day at Radford and the rain in the second half didn't help things any. The lack of game experience on VCU's side was not apparent
at all as VCU played almost the whole first half in the attacking 22m of the field. Radford was on their heels the whole first half, but unluckily, VCU couldn't punch one in for the try. The only saving grace for Radford was the talented foot of their flyhalf who kicked them out of trouble every
chance she had. Unfortunately for Radford, the outstanding play of the VCU fullback, Alexa Ebersole, helped keep VCU in Radford's half of the field.
Time and time again, Alexa caught the kicked balls and raced straight back up the field to keep VCU in good position
Another unlucky occurrence was the loss of VCU's #4 only minutes into the game. When Melissa went down, Dawnielle Morath stepped up to fill the void
from flanker and did a damn fine job even though I think she didn't like it.
She stepped up and played very well at a position she was very unfamiliar with. When Dawnielle was moved up, Nadia Church came in to play flanker and
also did very, very well. Nadia tackled like a madwomen and all of them were legal!! She got low and hit hard and was always there to pressure. She also pressured well on the line-outs.
After playing an amazing first half in Radford's half of the field, the whistle blew for the break with the score tied 0 - 0. The weather in the
second half was not forgiving at all as was apparent by the knock- ons from both sides. Scrums and rucks became harder and harder as Radford tried to take control of the game. Once again, VCU fought back to get good field position. VCU took good advantage of every penalty and put themselves right back into position twice with two very strong runs from Monique Brown; each run got VCU at least 20-30m down the pitch. The one thing that hurt VCU was the scrum in that their scrumhalf was feeding the ball well to her pack.
The only problem for Radford was the VCU scrumhalf, Jessica Hacker, who pressured her the entire game. It was hard for Radford's #9 to get good
clean ball because of Jessica's pressure. After controlling the whole game for over 60 minutes, it was disappointing when Radford marched down the
pitch and punched one in for 5 points. On a bad run of luck for VCU, Radford came in to score the try, but missed the conversion and the score
was Radford 5 and VCU 0.
VCU continued to push on and dominate the game. With about 20 minutes left
in the game, the VCU hooker, Aimee Hansen, butted heads with a Radford player and had to come out on the referees orders. She had a mountain on her head before she had even reached the sideline. Nadia went in as hooker and Cassandra Loomis stepped up to play flank. Time and time again, VCU
pushed and won line-outs but just couldn't'e get one in. The best part was we never gave up. Next to go down was Rachel Grey who, I thought, was hunched over because she had been knocked to the ground hard. Turns out, she had just misplaced her contact near her eyebrow. A quick mouthwash with
the lens and she was back in the game.
The sir warned us that it was the final play of the game and VCU was near midfield for a scrum. VCU won the scrum and it got all the way out to Erin
Taylor
who sprinted at least 40m on a breakaway headed for the try line. A Radford
player cut her off and in the process, Erin sustained a second degree sprain
to her ankle. The effort was one of the most valiant and determined I have
ever seen.
The final whistle blew, but wait; VCU still had some secret weapons on the
sideline, as did Radford, and both teams agreed to put all the subs in and
play another 15 minutes. Victory was still within reach.
VCU once again pushed hard in the scrums and won line-outs. Inside
Radford's 22, a penalty was called and it was time to score. Jessica Hacker
took her spot at the mark, toed the ball, and passed it off to Elena Madden
who burst through to score VCU's inaugural try. The score was now tied 5-5
and Alison Kuchta teed up the ball to convert. Her kick was good and VCU was
up 7-5. Play went back and forth for the next 5 minutes and when the final
whistle blew, it was VCU who was victorious.
After the game, Radford threw a social for VCU that, from what I heard, was
a good time. Luckily, I wasn't there to see what occurred, but from what I
hear, a good time was had by all. The only downside of the social is that
now we have to listen to Nadia sing rugby songs at practice.
Keep up the good work girls, you are doing an outstanding job!!!
