What's A Rugby?
It's only the world's second most popular game, following closely behind soccer. Rugby, a real sport, consists of 1 ball and 2 teams of 15 players each trying to score by running or kicking the ball across the end line and touching it down for what is called a "try." The field and ball are similar to those in American football, but rugby is better. Oh yeah and the ball can only advance by kicking and running with no foward passes. The game is exciting because it is continuous, with no timeouts, no 7th inning stretches and none of that other garbage. There are limited substitutions, so if you break your neck you had better keep playing (just kidding, but if you break your arm... that's another story)and everyone plays both offense and defense.
Rugby players not only increase their coordination and physical endurance they also develop tactical and strategic thinking skills that come in handy when running from the police. er, um, when playing rugby and reacting to the flow of the game.

Women Play Rugby?
Well of course! Women are better than men in everything else, and rugby is no exception. Don't be hesitant to play because of the contact aspect of the sport. It's not like football, which is a collison sport. Rugby is a contact sport.
Due to the diversity of Rugby's positions and skill requirements, anyone with two legs that hasn't had a lobotomy can play rugby at some level. Women of all shapes and sizes are encouraged to join. Skills that you may already possess from other sports will be helpful. Our team consists of former basketball players, soccer players, tennis players, cheerleaders and rowers. We've found that ping-pong players and croquet champions also make excellent rugby players.
Lack of experience is not a problem. There is always a first time. Your coaches and teammates will go out of their way to teach you the skills you will need. After participating in controlled practices you will be startled out of bed at 4 am and forced to do push ups naked in monroe park. Just kidding, this isn't the military. You will be eased into the action at a pace you are comfortable with.
All VCU ladies are strongly encouraged to join the club at ANY TIME. Just come to practice some day, even if it's just to watch. Don't be afraid to join in the club. We won't bite, but you may end up with some bruises. :)
